  1. Logistics: A battalion must carry its own food, ammunition, fuel, and medical supplies for 24 to 72 hours of combat. That requires trucks, cooks, mechanics, and medics. If the battalion is too large, the logistics tail becomes too heavy for a single headquarters to manage. If too small, it cannot sustain itself. The sweet spot is where the “tooth” (combat troops) to “tail” (support troops) ratio is about 3:1.

Sickness, leave, training, and combat losses mean a battalion is often at 70–85% of its authorized size. In prolonged campaigns, a “battalion” might be 300 men. Historical casualty reports often list “battalion strength” as the number of rifles available, not total personnel including cooks and clerks.

Mistake 3: Using battalion size to judge firepower. A 600-man infantry battalion with modern automatic rifles and mortars has far more firepower than a 1,000-man Napoleonic battalion with smoothbore muskets. Size is not the same as combat power.
