Chronology: The War 1973

January

Henry Kissinger ends six days of negotiations with Le Duc Tho in Paris that he terms "very extensive and very useful". Citing "progress," President Nixon halts all offensive action throughout North Vietnam.

In a televised report, President Nixon announces that Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho initialed a peace agreement in Paris. He says that all American prisoners of war will be released and the remaining 23,700-man American force in South Vietnam will be withdrawn within 60 days.

The Vietnam cease—fire agreement is signed in Paris.

The U.S. continues to bomb supply lines in Laos until a truce there is reached. Despite the truce in Vietnam, some fighting there continues to be reported.

The Pentagon identifies Colonel William B. Nolde of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, as the last American to die in the Vietnam War, just 11 hours before the truce took effect.


February

The first prisoners of war are released in Hanoi

A peace agreement is signed in contact with the new coalition.

March

The U.S. reaches agreement for departure of the last American.

The last American troops leave Vietnam and the last American prisoners of war are released in Hanoi.

Former prisoners of war are now free to tell their stories of torture by their North Vietnamese captors.

April

President Thieu visits President Nixon in California and receives a promise of continuing economic aid, but no pledge of military action.

The U.S. military resumes reconnaissance flights over North Vietnam to put pressure on them to stop violating the peace accords.

May

Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker leaves South Vietnam.

June

A new truce is signed to put. an end to all cease-fire violations.

Congress bans further aerial bombing of Cambodia after August 15.

Graham Martin replaces Ellsworth Bunker as U.S. Ambassador to South Vietnam.

August

The U.S. stops bombing Cambodia, marking the official end of U.S. combat in Southeast Asia. President Nixon pledges to continue support for the government of President Lon Nol.

October

Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and North Vietnamese negotiator Le Duc Tho are awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Le Duc Tho declines acceptance.
