OCCUPATIONAL FIELD 46, VISUAL INFORMATION
The Visual Information Support OccFld includes the operation and management of visual information functions in the areas of graphic arts, visual information library loan services, training devices, photographic laboratory operations, photography, videography, video editing and all aspects of printing and reproduction.
Qualification requirements vary by MOS, but include basic administrative, artistic and mechanical skills, as well as knowledge or experience with chemistry, mathematics, production techniques, and the ability to communicate and work closely with others.
The duties involve administrative, technical, managerial, and artistic skills. Visual information Marines will be required to learn administrative, accounting, filing, managerial and reporting procedures peculiar to the OccFld, and those artistic and technical aspects necessary for the individual MOSs. Marines are provided formal schooling upon acceptance to the OccFld.
Types of entry level jobs include work as a combat illustrator, photographer, videographer, and lithographer. The opportunity to participate in a formal apprenticeship program leading to receipt of a Department of Labor Certificate of Apprenticeship completion may be available in some MOSs with in OccFld 46 (refer to MCO 1550.22 for specific information concerning this program).
There is a wide variety of billets available in the OccFld, ranging From duty with the FMF to the opportunity to serve in the White House Communications Agency.
Marines entering this OccFld will receive MOS 4600 (Basic Information Marine) until successfully completing a MOS-granting course at the Defense Information School (DINFOS), Fort Meade, MD or the Defense Mapping School (DMS), Fort Belvoir, VA. Personnel entering through lateral movement must complete the appropriate formal schooling or MOJT prior to being awarded MOS 4611, 4612, 4641, or 4671.
