OCCUPATIONAL FIELD 44, LEGAL SERVICES
The legal service OccFld consists of MOS 4421, Legal Services Specialist/Scopist and MOS 4429, Legal Services Reporter (Stenotype). Personnel in these MOSs provide services required in the operational, managerial, legal administrative, typing, clerical, and courts-martial reporting/transcribing areas necessary for the proper functioning of a legal services support section (LSSS), law center, or office of the staff judge advocate. Marines entering the OccFld receive MOS 4400, Basic Legal Services Marine. Formal schooling is provided to all Marines entering the OccFld.
MOS 4421. Marines assigned to OccFld 44 through recruit accession are required to successfully complete the Legal Services Specialist Course at Camp Johnson, NC, and demonstrate a typing proficiency of 35 words per minute to attain MOS 4421. Upon assignment of MOS 4421, Marines may be selected to attend the Legal Services Scopist Course at Camp Johnson, NC for follow-on training.
MOS 4429. Marines assigned MOS 4429 must attend a 2 year stenotype course currently taught at Reporting Academy of Virginia, Springfield, VA. Once a Marine's request for a lateral move to OccFld 44 has been approved by CMC, basic MOS 4400 is assigned and the Marine is normally ordered TAD to complete the first available Legal Administration/Legal Services Specialist Course at the Personnel Administration School, Camp Lejeune, NC, and demonstrate a typing proficiency of 35 words a minute. Marines completing 2 years of instruction, but not graduating from the course, may be transferred to a major command to receive additional training. The Marines may then be certified upon request from their command to the CMC (JA). Instructions and complete requirements for submitting applications for consideration and selection to attend the stenotype course are published annually by MARADMIN.
A Marine requesting a lateral move into OccFld 44 must first receive an interview from a 4421 Legal Services Specialist (Legal Chief), or a 4430 Legal Administration Officer prior to HQMC approving a lateral move request. Once a Marine's request for a Lateral move to OccFld 44 has been approved by CMC, basic MOS 4400 is assigned and the Marine is normally ordered TAO to the first available Basic Typing and Legal Administration/ Legal Services Specialist Course at the Administration School, Camp Lejune, NC. Upon completion of these courses, MOS 4421 will be assigned. Reservists may be ordered to the Basic Typing and Legal Administration/Legal Services Specialist Course (MOS 4421).
The appropriate command shall initiate action to void the MOS of any Marine in OccFld 44 who receives nonjudicial punishment or is convicted by a courts-martial or civilian court for any offense involving dangerous drugs or marijuana. Also, action shall be initiated to void the OccFld 44 MOS if convicted by courts-martial or civilian court for any offense involving controlled substances or for any offense involving moral turpitude as defined in the Manual for Courts-Martial, United States, 1984.
