MOS 7220, Air Traffic Control Officer (I)
a. Summary.
Air traffic control officers command an Air Traffic Control (ATC) Detachment. They act as officers-in-charge of
Air Traffic Control Facilities at Marine Corps
Air Stations. They perform as Control Tower
Operators and Radar Air Traffic Controllers. They coordinate and direct activities related to air traffic
control and airspace management as staff officers
at squadrons, Marine Air Control Groups (MACG)/Marine
Aircraft Wings (MAW), and at other senior level units. The MATCALS Advanced Operator, Military
Airspace Management, MAJIC, Automated Terminal
Instrument Procedures (TERPS), MAWTS-1 Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) and JAC2C courses
are available for skill enhancement training
for ATC officers.
b. Requirements/Prerequisites
(1) Complete the Air Traffic Controller Course Class A1,
Air Traffic Control Officer's Course, Class C2, at
NATTC, Millington, TN, or equivalent DoD/DOT
school and possess a valid FAA Air Traffic Controller Specialist (ATSC) certificate.
(2) Must meet the physical requirements per the MMD 15-69
(9) and the FAA Aviation Medical Examiner's Guide.
(3) Must complete all training, and certification
requirements as defined below and in other Marine Corps
and Department of the Navy (NAVAIR) directives.
(4) Must have a secret security clearance.
c. Duties
(1) Acts as an air traffic controller by obtaining
a control tower position qualification on Ground Control and
a Radar Final Controller (RFC) Air Traffic Control
Specialist (ATCS) rating.
(2) Supervises Marine and/or civilian personnel assigned
to an Air Traffic Control Facility, Marine Air Control Squadron
(MACS) or MACS ATC Detachment to include operations,
training, and evaluation.
(3) Manage the operations, fiscal and administrative
functions of, or within, a MACS or MACS ATC Detachment. Coordinate
these functions while serving as Officer-in-Charge
of an ATC Facility.
(4) Process air traffic control and airspace management
plans and procedures through specific published criteria.
(5) Maintain liaison with FAA, other appropriate
civilian agencies, and other military agencies
with regard to air traffic control or airspace matters.
(6) Maintain a tactical understanding of other agencies
of the Marine Air Command and Control System while
leading a ATC Detachment, or MACG Detachment.
