MOS 7208, Air Support Control/Low Altitude
Air Defense (LAAD) Officer (I). a. Summary.
Air support control/LAAD officers direct and coordinate air support missions and the employment of surface
to air weapons, and advise commanders on matters
pertaining to the employment and control of
air support and surface to air weapons. The JAC2C and MAWTS-1 Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) courses are available
as skill enhancement training for the air support
control officers.
b. Requirements/Prerequisites
(1) Complete the Air Support Control Officers Course at
Marine Corps Communications-Electronics School, Twentynine
Palms, CA and the Low Altitude Air Defense Officer
Course at Ft Bliss, TX.
(2) Must have a secret security clearance.
(3) Must have normal color vision.
c. Duties
(1) Supervises and directs the processing of direct
air support requests, coordinates aircraft employment with other
supporting arms, and provides procedural control to
assigned aircraft.
(2) Directs and coordinates the tactical employment of
surface to air weapons.
(3) Evaluates intelligence, makes estimates of the
situation, and formulates and implements plans
of action.
(4) Determines the suitability of targets as objectives for
aircraft, number and type of the mission aircraft,
and armament required.
(5) Operates and evaluates status of various electronic
equipment assigned to the Marine Air Support Squadron required
for the conduct of air support operations.
(6) Supervises and coordinates the embarkation and
emplacement of air support equipment and surface to air weapons systems.
(7) Plans for employment of the direct air support
center.
(8) Advises commanders on matters pertaining to employment
and control of air support and surface to air weapons.
(9) Directs and supervises administration, communication,
maintenance, logistics, supply and the security matters
of the unit.
(10) Coordinates surface to air weapons fire with that of
other units and designated command and control agencies.
