MOS 6802, Weather Service Officer (II/III)

a. Summary. Weather service officers function as supervisors and coordinators of meteorological and related activities.

b. Requirements/Prerequisites

(1) Warrant officers must possess a bachelor's degree in meteorology, or have served in MOS 6842, or have completed the Meteorological Oceangraphic Analyst/Forecaster Course at Keesler AFB,
MS, or have completed the Reserve Aerographer Mate School (RAMS) at Gulfport, MS, and have demonstrated weather forecasting qualification through performance.

(2) LDOs must have demonstrated weather forecasting qualification through performance as a warrant officer.

(3) LDOs must have successfully completed the Marine Corps Weapons and Tactics Instructor course conducted by Marine Aviation Weapons Tactics Squadron One awarding MOS 6877.

(4) Must be eligible for access to sensitive compartmented information based on a special background investigation.

c. Duties

(1) Supervises and coordinates the activities of personnel engaged in the collection, evaluation, interpretation, and dissemination of weather observation and forecasts and the installation, operation, and maintenance of meteorological equipment.

(2) Provides weather forecasts and conducts climatological studies and studies of meteorological phenomena directly related to improving local area forecasts.

(3) Ensures compliance with existing regulations governing the operations of weather service activities.

(4) Informs the command of destructive weather which could adversely affect operations and ensures proper and timely dissemination of information related to destructive weather phenomena.

(5) Prepares and presents staff and command level briefings.

(6) Maintains current knowledge of the latest innovations in forecasting techniques/procedures and maintains the lead in training personnel.

(7) Supervises the requisitioning and accounting of materials and equipment.

(8) Provides staff support in the planning for, and utilization of, mobile meteorological facilities and provides
climatological, meteorological, and astronomical data for operations orders and annexes.
