Corporal Meyers, Robert W. USMC
Bronze Star Medal

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the BRONZE STAR MEDAL to

CORPORAL ROBERT W. MYERS
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

For service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

“For heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy on the Island of Grenada while serving with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 261, 22nd Marine Amphibious Unit on 26 October 1983. Corporal Myers participated as an aircrewman aboard a CH-53D helicopter in the evacuation of two hundred and thirty one Americans held hostage by a number of armed Cubans and local militiamen at Grand Anse Beach. With a force of U.S. Army Rangers providing cover, Corporal Myers' aircraft landed on the bullet swept beach to rescue the Americans. He spotted a group of evacuees one hundred meters down the beach too frightened and confused by enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire to continue on their own. Realizing the grave nature of the situation and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, Corporal Myers exited the aircraft and dashed down the beach, fearlessly exposing himself to enemy fire. Making his way to the huddled Americans, he led them under fire to his aircraft, assisting small children and reassuring the other evacuees. Not until the last evacuee was aboard the aircraft did Corporal Myers himself return to his post as the aircraft departed the beach under heavy mortar and automatic weapons fire. His intrepid spirit and courageous actions under fire were directly responsible for the safe evacuations of sixty American citizens who might have otherwise perished on the beach. Corporal Myers' noteworthy actions, perseverance, and complete devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.”

The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.
