PFC Gorham, Thomas F. USMC
Bronze Star Medal

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the
BRONZE STAR MEDAL to

PRIVATE FIRST CLASS THOMAS F. GORHAM
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

For service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

“For heroic achievement while serving as a member of the American Embassy Security Detachment, Weapons Company, Battalion Landing Team 2/8 in Beirut, Lebanon on 8 January 1984. Private First Class Gorham was providing helicopter landing zone security near the American Embassy when the zone came under intense small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire. Although not in charge of the detail, he spotted the enemy and directed fire to suppress the attack. Seeing a helicopter approach the landing zone, he moved from safety and waved the helicopter off. Private First Class Gorham then spotted a wounded Marine, and under enemy fire and without regard for his personal safety, he ran to him and carried him to a covered position. Throughout the exchange, he maintained radio contact with the Embassy Security Detachment, providing reports on what was occurring in order that necessary assistance might be sent. His unhesitatingly selfless actions were those expected of a seasoned leader. Private First Class Gorham's personal valor, superior performance, and complete dedication to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.”

The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.
