Lieutenant Commander Elliot, II, Arthur James Navy
Bronze Star Medal

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Bronze Star Medal posthumously to

Lieutenant Commander Arthur James ELLIOT, II
United States Navy

for service at set forth in the following

CITATION
"For heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy of 29 December 1968 while serving as Commander Task Unit 194.9.0. Lieutenant Commander ELLIOT's force, composed of patrol boats and river assault craft, was assigned to block enemy movement of troops, weapons, and combat essential supplies on one of the major waterways leading to the vital port of Saigon. He personally led his patrol units through an area which was heavily wooded on both sides, exposing them to the danger of ambush from concealed Viet Cong positions along the river bank. The unit was attacked by heavy automatic weapons and rocket fire. Displaying professional skill and courage, he immediately directed accurate and effective return fire from the patrol craft on which he was embarked. He ordered his coxswain to maneuver into a position from which covering fire could be provided for the accompanying patrol boat and, having temporarily suppressed the enemy fire, call for air and artillery bombardment of the enemy positions. A final exploding rocket round then mortally wounded Lieutenant Commander ELLIOT while his boat was breaking contact and clearing the danger area. His inspiring leadership, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."

The Combat "V" is authorized.
