The Sixth Marine Division had a short life as Divisions go. It was formed on Guadalcanal in the Fall of 1944, using as a base , the 4th Marine Regiment and the 22nd Marine regiment, who were operating as the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade and had just secured GUAM and returned to Guadacanal. By adding several thousand, new marines just out of line camp at Camp Lejeune N.C. (of which I was one) another Regiment was formed, The 29th. We trained on The Canal until about the first of March 1945 and loaded ships for Okinawa (See ""BATTLE FOR OKINAWA)
In July, when the island was secured, we went to Guam to train for the invasion of Japan. The war ended in August and the 6th Marine Division, with the exception of the 4th Regiment who was sent to Tokyo, Was sent to Tsingtao, China to accept the surrender of the Japanese forces in that area, after the surrender in Tokyo, the 4th Regiment joined us in China. The Sixth Marine Division was disbanded about June 1946 and personnel reassigned or separated on the return to the States.
