Colonel Joseph V. Medina

 UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

Colonel Medina holds a Bachelor of Science (Physics) from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1976, and a Master of Science (Systems Management) from the University of Southern California. 

Following completion of The Basic School, he was assigned to 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, at Camp Pendleton California.  He served as a Rifle Platoon Commander, Assistant Adjutant, Company  Commander (Company F, 2d Battalion, 5th Marines), and culminated this tour as the Headquarters Company Commander, 5th Marines.  He transferred in April 1980 to the 3d Marine Division at Okinawa, Japan.

Upon joining the 3d Marine Division, Colonel Medina was assigned to 2d Battalion, 4th Marines. He served as Battalion Adjutant and later as Company Commander, Company F.  Following this tour he was transferred to the Marine Corps Recruiting Station, Seattle, Washington where he served as Executive Officer (May 1981 - July 1984).  Following this assignment, he completed Amphibious Warfare School as an Honor graduate in May 1985 and was transferred to the 1st Marine Division.

Upon joining the 1st Marine Division, he was assigned to the 3d Battalion, 5th Marines.  He served as Company Commander, Weapons Company from June 1985 to January 1987.  He was subsequently reassigned as the Battalion S-3/Operations Officer until July 1988. In July 1988, then Major Medina joined the Naval ROTC Unit at Penn State University as the Marine Officer Instructor/Associate Professor of Naval Science.  During this tour he served two summer assignments at Officer Candidates School, Quantico, Virginia, as Executive Officer (1989) and subsequently as Company Commander, Company G (1990).  Colonel Medina was selected to attend the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and completed this course during the 1991-92 year as a Distinguished Graduate. 

Following completion of Command and Staff College, Colonel Medina remained at the Marine Corps University and was reassigned to the staff of The Basic School.  He served initially as Company Commander for two Basic Officer Courses.  Upon selection for Lieutenant Colonel, he was assigned as the Instructional Group Chief/Chief Instructor.  During October 1994 he was transferred to the 2d Marine Division at Camp Lejeune. 

Upon reporting to the 2d Marine Division, Colonel Medina was initially assigned to the G-3/Operations Section.  In May 1995, he assumed command of 3d Battalion, 2d Marine Regiment, the "Betio Battalion".  During his tour as Battalion Commander, his Battalion was deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in Support of JTF-160 for Operation SEA SIGNAL in 1995 and to Okinawa, Japan as part of the Unit Deployment Program in 1996.  Upon relinquishment of his command in February 1997, he was reassigned as Executive Officer, 2d Marines until being transferred to the NATO Defense College, Rome, Italy in August 1997. 

Upon graduation from the NATO Defense College in February 1998, he was transferred to Headquarters, U.S. European Command where he was assigned as Contingency Plans Branch Chief, J3 Directorate. During the onset of the Kosovo Crisis in August 1998 until June 1999, he simultaneously served as Chief, Kosovo Plans Group for Operations NOBLE ANVIL/ALLIED FORCE and JOINT GUARDIAN.  Upon his promotion to Colonel in June 1999, he was assigned as Chief, Operations Plans Division (J35), Operations Directorate.  He was transferred to Marine Corps Recruiting Command at Quantico, Virginia in January 2000, as the G-3, Enlisted Recruiting Operations & Plans.  He assumed command of the 3rd Marine Regiment in June 2001. 

Colonel Medina's personal decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two Gold Stars, Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Navy Commendation Medal with two Gold Stars.
