Second Marine Division, Coral Snake
Unauthorized design, 2nd Div. Coral Snake, was observed being worn in San Diego as early as Sept. 1943. Evidence indicates it was made at the request of 2nd Div. Marines returning from the Guadalcanal battle and was based on a proposed design, incorporating the Southern cross and colors of the 1st Div. patch.
Second Division Error or Heart Patch
2nd Div. Error or Heart patch. Privately made stateside after an incorrect drawing appeared in a color insert to the Headquarters Bulletin in Jan. 1944. The editor had the drawing made based on a phone conversation with a 2nd Div. Marine who had returned from the Pacific. As the original batch of patches had been made in Australia, there were none available for comparison in Washington DC.
